“Summer” is not a premiere date, but heck, a premiere season is better than nothing. The wildly charming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns for its third season this summer, and if this new teaser is anything to go by, they’ll be having a lot of fun—by playing with genre and style. We’ve got a ’70s-vibe mystery! A very vintage look! And for some reason we’re wiring the Enterprise? And there’s a documentary? And a holodeck???!?
Here’s the synopsis from Paramount Plus:
In season three, when we reconnect with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, still under the command of Captain Pike, they face the conclusion of season two’s harrowing encounter with the Gorn. But new life and civilizations await, including a villain that will test our characters’ grit and resolve. An exciting twist on classic Star Trek, season three takes characters both new and beloved to new heights, and dives into thrilling adventures of faith, duty, romance, comedy, and mystery, with varying genres never before seen on any other Star Trek.
No, your eyes weren’t playing space tricks on you: There are brief glimpses of Patton Oswalt and Rhys Darby—snapping his fingers dramatically—in this one-minute teaser. (Office consensus thinks maybe Darby is playing Trelane.)
Cillian O’Sullivan also guest stars, along with the returning Melanie Scrofano, Carol Kane, and special guest star Paul Wesley (doing a fantastic job as James T. Kirk). They join series stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, and Martin Quinn.
Strange New Worlds has Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers as co-showrunners. It returns to Paramount Plus sometime this summer—which really isn’t soon enough. But at least we already know there’s a fourth season coming too; that’s currently in production.
